Hello, I'm Janine John and Lake District Gems is my blog exploring the Lake District's hidden gems and best-kept secrets!
I've been lucky enough to live in this beautiful corner of the UK all my life, but one day I decided that I just wasn't making the most of what was on my doorstep - and so in February 2015 I challenged myself to get out exploring and, with my love of writing and photography, Lake District Gems was born.
I'm not a fell walker, so whereas most personal blogs about the Lakes feature hill walking and mountain activities, my posts focus on the simple pleasures to be enjoyed at lower level and at a more relaxed pace! The hidden gems I've unearthed so far include an adorable 17th century viewing station tucked away in the grounds of an historic estate, some stunning but little-known formal and natural gardens, and the area's only surviving working bobbin mill. I've also taken hard hat tours of unusual places including a processing mill at the head of a mining valley, and even taken a turn at the helm of an iconic Lake District steam boat!
I have been fortunate to meet many lovely and fascinating people through researching posts for the blog, and readers have been kind enough to share their own experiences of the Lakes in the blog's comments too. Whether you are a regular visitor to the Lake District or have never been to the area (perhaps I can convince you to take your next break in this fabulous place!), please do visit the blog as there's something for everyone.
